Running an independent business in Stockport has been a leap of faith for some, and a test of resilience for others. But just see the positivity on our high street right now, it’s all going in the right direction!

Agapanthus Interiors has been in their location for 10 years now. They love the architecture, character and potential of Stockport and feel extremely positive. Zoë feels Stockport “has become a destination for interesting shopping and dining experiences and it’s only going to get even better.”

Primus, Disability Stockport have been in their location since 2009, and in Stockport for 42 years. She feels really positive for the future of Stockport, saying “the people of Stockport are fabulous, very friendly and welcoming. We are in central Stockport, there are some lovely shops and cafes. Lots of historic buildings and architecture for our members to explore and enjoy.”

Hidden Gem opened mid-2021, Gemma and Paula have always been drawn to the “beautiful quirky historic market place Since being little when our parents used to bring us to the market and walk us down to the Underbank.” With so much to offer, they believe we’re going to be the newest tourist attraction!

Cath from Moran Tools & Hardware feels the future is undecided, and with twenty plus years in the Market Hall she’s seen plenty of changes and says opening up felt like a good idea at the time! Hillgate Cakery also set up on a whim. Simon loved the look of the area, even though 5 years ago it was pretty unloved, there was still an the air of faded grandeur. He’s “extremely excited about the future, not only our business, but all the fantastic independents getting established in what is fast becoming a rediscovered gem of an area.” And whilst he loves stripes, he’s not a fan of masking tape!

Underbank Studios opened mid-2021, Stockport born and bred, Heather, Luca and Lily are always pinching themselves “being on such a vibrant street and having friends in our neighbouring businesses who are doing amazing things. It’s got such a great vibe, and we have always dreamt of having a creative hub.” Check online for their events and workshops!

Blades Barbers  opened 17 years ago and Guy sees us as the next Northern Quarter. Angela’s run Kitsch Republic for 5 years and is thrilled to have the opportunity to trade from The Pop Up in Merseyway. “It has been amazing to showcase our products on the high street this year.” Mrs Griffins Traditional Sweet Shop opened 3 years ago and David feels Stockport “is well on its way in making a recovery from lesser times” and there’s a lot of potential in this market town. Ann-Marie opened Underbanks Commercial Finance & Gallery five months ago and she says “the town has a lovely feel to it. I love old buildings and find the town to be a visual joy.”  But parking is expensive!

There are many businesses in the town centre who’ve weathered too many difficult years, and yet they’re proudly still here. They need to be celebrated and promoted just as much as the new businesses starting up or moving into town
